What if you’re paralyzed and can’t even move your mouth? A new generation of brain implants fishes the words straight from the brains of paralyzed people and allows them to communicate again; an essential human need. Stijn Goossens and Bouwe van Straten discuss this with Nick Ramsey, neuroscientist at UMC Utrecht. Ramsey is a pioneer in placing brain implants to make communication possible again for people with neurological disorders. He would prefer to see a universal implant, usable for all kinds of different disabilities.
Also included: A highly energy-efficient analog AI chip, the successful Indian moon mission, the mystery of the octopus garden and the human Y-chromosome mapped.
