Madrid –
Brahim Diaz said to want to defend Moroccan national team. This desire is present because Diaz is not relied on by many Spanish national team.
Diaz has previously always been a mainstay of the Spanish national team in the age group. He appeared with the Spanish U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams. Diaz also helped bring the U-17 Spanish National Team to runner up in the 2016 U-17 European Cup.
However, in the senior Spanish national team, Diaz had difficulty getting regular call-ups. He only played once for the Matadors against Lithuania in June 2021. After that, he was never looked at again.
In fact, Diaz’s appearance was quite good when he was loaned to AC Milan last season. This season, he also got playing minutes with Real Madrid.
This condition made Diaz reportedly start to want to defend the Moroccan national team. Diaz was able to get a Moroccan passport because his father was from that country.
Diaz also complies with FIFA regulations regarding players who can move to the country they play for. FIFA rules state that players with dual passports can change national teams if they play no more than three times for the national team before turning 21. This is because Diaz has only played once for the Spanish national team.
If the request for a transfer to defend the national team is approved, Diaz has the closest opportunity to defend Morocco at the 2024 African Cup of Nations which will take place in January 2024.
Spain and Morocco are geographically close. Several players currently defending Morocco were also born and live in Spain.
Currently in the Moroccan national team there is Achraf Hakimi who was born in Madrid and Abde Ezzalzouli who moved from childhood to Spain.
