Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”) whirls through the early days of the ruthless American film industry. Brad Pitt plays against his own stardom, and Margot Robbie is so phenomenal that her performance should be studied in acting classes.
This film is a tour de force. A big attack. An overload. Actors, costume design, production design, dramaturgy and direction: everything comes under the wheels of a furious idea. Is that bad? Not at all. Because “Babylon” is the kind of cinema that can free us from the storytelling monotony of streaming services.
