Bracelets of French Queen Marie-Antoinette sold for…

Bracelets of the French Queen Marie-Antoinette went under the hammer at auction house Christie’s in Geneva for more than 7 million euros on Tuesday.

It was the first time that the jewels with a total of 112 diamonds were auctioned. Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s international jewelry director who led the auction, told the Geneva auction room that the bracelets had been in the same family for nearly 200 years. The buyer bid by phone and has not been identified.

Before trying to flee France with Louis XVI and their children following the French Revolution, Marie-Antoinette had sent the jewels to Brussels. From there they were transferred to her native Austria. The Queen was hugely unpopular with the population and was beheaded by guillotine in 1793. Her daughter Marie-Therese survived the revolution and received the jewels when she arrived in Austria.
