Brabant wants more houses, even if this is at the expense of the countryside

Most people from Brabant are prepared to sacrifice rural areas in order to build houses. And if municipalities build too few social rental homes, the province can force them to do so. This is evident from the answers that more than 18,000 people from Brabant gave in the Kieskompas, which has been online since last week.

Omroep Brabant, together with the other regional broadcasters and the Kieskompas website, drew up a voting guide for the Provincial Council elections. More than 18,000 people from Brabant of different ages, backgrounds and from all parts of the province have already completed this Electoral Compass in the first week.

72% want pressure from the province
The statement ‘More homes should be built, even if the green countryside disappears’ yielded this result:

  • 51 percent of Brabant people agree.
  • 32 percent disagree.
  • The rest don’t know yet.

This is not the case everywhere: in Limburg, for example, only 39 percent think building in the countryside is a good idea.

In addition, the people of Brabant believe that it is best to put pressure on municipalities if they build too few social rental homes. 72 percent of the people who completed the Kieskompas are in favor of this.

This does not mean that the people of Brabant are prepared to give up the countryside just like that:

  • 55 percent do not want outlying areas to give way to business parks.
  • 24 percent think it should.
  • The rest have no opinion yet.

36 percent believe that polluting companies that are good for employment should leave our province anyway.

If nature suffers from recreation, the people of Brabant are remarkably outspoken: 72 percent want to limit recreation in the Biesbosch in order to protect nature there.

Drug nuisance
Other matters on which the people of Brabant largely agree:

  • Drug nuisance should be tackled more vigorously and with less emphasis on prevention (68 percent).
  • More money should be spent on public transport, including in the villages (65 percent).
  • There should be more public charging stations (62 percent).

young and old
There are major differences between the young and the elderly on some subjects:

  • 80 percent of over-50s want to take a tougher approach to drug nuisance, compared to 44 percent of voters under 35.
  • 50 percent of the under-35s want more wind turbines, while the over-50s see it much less (36 percent).
