Brabant receives 13,500 refugees, who happen to be in these places

Brabant is well on its way to providing mandatory reception areas for asylum seekers. More than 90 percent of the places that must be ready on July 1, 2025 have been committed. 96,000 regular places should be created, spread throughout the country. Our province is responsible for 14,689 places. Of these, 13,478 were found.

The dissolution law officially came into effect on February 1. The aim is to distribute refugees evenly throughout the country. Previously, the performance of reception centers depended largely on the willingness of cities. The distribution law ensures that each town is obliged to take in a set number of refugees.

The ‘regional reception plan’ was given until today to be submitted to the government. King’s Commissioner Ina Adema is proud that the Brabant municipalities have already come this far. “Until recently, Brabant had an order for around 11,000 places. But as a result of a motion accepted by the SP in the House of Representatives, an additional allocation of nearly 4,000 places has been added and these places have also largely been found.”

More places due to SP movement
Adema refers to what is called SES-WOA score. So the number of shelter places is distributed not only on the basis of the population of each town, but also on the basis of wealth. And Brabant’s cities score well here.

Brabant has also chosen to agree on the number of places in each region. This means that not every town has found the places that have been sent in separately, but the number of shelter places in each area has been sent in. It looks like this for Brabant:

Part of the work from The Hague is also to create shelters for minor unaccompanied refugees. These young people need different care than adults. A shelter with more supervision, but also with a school nearby. And there are big concerns there.

Concerns about the education of minor refugees
For example, the region of Hart van Brabant shows that it will do its best to make these places a reality (202 places), under the strict condition that the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) is educated previously arranged full status. the future of this target group. If special transport is required, this must also be arranged. Adema understands that reservation very well. “I share those concerns. When you take care of people, you also want them to be able to go to school. I will also take this concern to the government.”

This means that the number of guaranteed childcare places in Brabant could still change. The South East region also has serious doubts. According to the region, the promised locations are ‘obviously subject to the COA’s sufficient capacity to perform and operate, financial feasibility, spatial arrangements and other unforeseen factors’.

For now, Brabant 1211 is a short place. Something Brabant hopes will be approved by the government. Mainly because Brabant has had many long-term reception facilities for some time. There is already a large shelter in Budel, Oisterwijk, Gilze and Rijen and Grave.

This map shows how many shelter spaces cities have set up and which ones have already set up enough spaces:

The ball is now in Faber’s court
It is now in charge of Minister Faber of Asylum. It will evaluate the plans of the districts and maybe force the cities to create shelters. The question is whether she will do that, her party PVV very much wants to get rid of the distribution law. To repeal the dissolution law, the House of Representatives and the Senate must pass a new bill and that will take some time.

Adema emphasizes that the law of diffusion has shown that it is possible to find many shelters in a very short time. “That shows that the distribution law is effective in the given circumstances. So I ask the minister to keep the distribution law for as long as is appropriate.”
