BQE Closures and Detours: Important Information for October 14-16

Starting Saturday, October 14, at 2:00 in the morning, until Monday, October 16, at 4:00 in the morning, the BQE (Brooklyn-Queens-Expressway) will remain closed at several access points .

The commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), Ydanis Rodríguez, announced that the measure responds to necessary repair and replacement work.

Some of the full closures include the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp, the Queens-bound Manhattan Bridge off-ramp, and partial Staten Island-bound lanes.

“The repairs focus on new concrete and reinforcing steel bars that are being added to the sections of the BQE, near Clark Street and Grace Court,” the NYC DOT statement detailed. The commissioner noted that these are “critical repairs.”

These are the closures on the BQE highway, from October 14 to 16

The Queens-bound BQE will be completely closed from Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street. During the same period, the Staten Island-bound BQE will be reduced to one lane of traffic between Sands Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Additional restrictions:

Left turns are prohibited on Atlantic Avenue, heading east toward Hicks Street (except for buses) Left turns are prohibited on Atlantic Avenue, heading east toward Clinton Street (except for buses) Bus stops B67 and B69 at Pearl and Sands Street will be closed. The B61 and B63 bus stops at Columbia Street and Atlantic Avenue will be rerouted to Atlantic and Henry Street and detoured via Congress Street and Hicks Street to Atlantic Avenue.

Detour from Atlantic Avenue to Queens:

All Queens-bound vehicles should exit at Atlantic Avenue Left onto Boerum Place Turn right onto Tillary Street and take the ramp to BQE

Third Avenue on-ramp detour to Queens:

Exit the Gowanus Expressway at Exit 21 toward Third Avenue (Brooklyn) Travel on Third Avenue Left at Flatbush Avenue Turn right onto Tillary Street and take the ramp to BQE

Queens-bound Prospect Highway on-ramp detour:

Travel on the Prospect Expressway toward the Gowanus Expressway Exit the Gowanus Expressway at Hamilton Avenue Turn right onto Hicks Street Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue Turn left onto Boerum Place Turn right onto Tillary Street and take the ramp to BQE

Linden Boulevard Detour to Queens:

Exit Gowanus Expressway onto Prospect Expressway. Exit at 10th Avenue Turn right onto 10th Avenue Turn left onto McDonald Avenue Turn left onto Catón Avenue Continue on Linden Boulevard Detour routes to Conduit Avenue with connections to Nassau Expressway, Van Wyck Expressway and Long Island Expressway a via Van Wyck Expressway

Sands Street on-ramp detour bound for Staten Island:

Turn right onto Gold Street from Sands Street Turn right onto Tillary Street Turn left onto Flatbush Avenue Turn right onto Fourth Avenue Turn right onto Prospect Avenue and take the ramp to the Gowanus Expressway.

Staten Island-bound Vine Street detour for drivers coming from the Brooklyn Bridge:

Exit at Cadman Plaza Turn right at Cadman Plaza West Turn slightly left onto Old Fulton Street Turn left onto Calle Furman Turn left onto Avenida Atlántico Turn right onto Calle Colombia Enter BQE via the entrance ramp Columbia Street

Flushing Avenue Detour to Staten Island:

Take Williamsburg Street West to Park Avenue. Turn left onto Washington Avenue Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue Turn left onto Third Avenue Take the entrance ramp to the Gowanus Highway.

NYC DOT recommends that you avoid the BQE during scheduled closures and expect long travel times. Each detour will be heavily signposted and there will be varying message signs in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
