BPOM Gives Ivermectin Clinical Trial Permission for Covid-19 Drugs

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) give Approval for Implementation of Clinical Trials (PPUK) Ivermectin for use as medicine covid-19. Clinical trial will be conducted in eight hospitals in Jakarta.

“The POM Agency is in line with the WHO recommendation to facilitate the immediate implementation of clinical trials initiated by the Health Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health,” said Head of BPOM Penny Lukito through a press conference broadcast on the Indonesian POM RI Youtube, on Monday (28/5).

Eight hospitals that will conduct Ivermectin clinical trials are Friendship Hospital Jakarta, Sulianti Saroso Hospital Jakarta, Sudarso Hospital Pontianak, Adam Malik Hospital Medan, Gatot Soebroto Hospital Jakarta, Air Force Hospital Jakarta, Suyoto General Hospital Jakarta and Covid-19 Emergency Hospital Wisma Atlet .

Clinical trials were conducted over a period of three months by administering the drug to patients for 5 days and monitoring started 28 days after drug administration.

Penny said the approval for the clinical trial was given by BPOM with consideration of the publication of several clinical trials that have been carried out by a number of other countries related to the use of Ivermectin as a Covid-19 drug.

In some of these publications, he said, it was found that the drug which is an anthelmintic can be used to deal with COVID-19.

He said this was also in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) which stated that Ivermectin could be used for COVID-19 in the scope of clinical trials.

“Thus, public access to this drug can also be carried out widely in the implementation of clinical trials,” said Penny.

Previously, BPOM gave marketing authorization for Ivermectin. However, this permission was given in the context of administering drugs to worm patients.

BPOM said that currently there is not enough evidence to prove the effectiveness of Ivermectin in cases of COVID-19. For this reason, clinical trials are needed as evidence.
