BPOM calls the gallons containing BPA to be labeled immediately

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – National Food and Drug Control Agency (bpm extension) cites the labeling of polycarbonate plastic bottled water (AMDK) products containing the compound bisphenol A (BPA) is urgently needed.

Rita Endang, deputy for oversight of processed foods at the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), said BPA is not just a national problem, it has become a global problem.

This was broadcast in the expert forum: urgency BPA-labelled on Packaged Drinking Water Products for Consumer Safety at the Makara Building, University of Indonesia.

“Problems that have been regulated in various countries. So this is a global issue that needs to be addressed,” he said in a press release, quoted on Monday (11/28/2022).

Rita said the use of BPA chemicals in food packaging is banned in a number of countries such as France, Brazil, Colombia and the states of Vermont and California in the United States.

“In California, a warning label has been put in place that reads: BPA can cause cancer, pregnancy, and reproductive harm,” she said.

“We don’t want to wait until there are too many or very critical cases to then take action. If there are problems, they need to be addressed immediately. BPOM is here to protect public safety,” he added.

As already reported, BPOM has issued a draft BPOM regulation regarding the second amendment to the BPOM regulation number 31 of 2018 relating to the labels of processed food products.

Meanwhile, explained Mochamad Chalid, materials expert from the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, the risk of BPA contamination in food packaging is dangerous because it is used not according to regulations.

“The release of BPA can occur through the decay of polycarbonate in the presence of water at a temperature for a certain time,” Chalid said.

Meanwhile, temperature and time are the keys to the release of BPA compounds from gallons of polycarbonate into drinking water.

He said the greatest potential for the release of BPA compounds occurred during the transportation of gallons from the production system to consumers.

“And because the chevrons are used over and over again,” he said.
