Boys can also get vaccine against HPV cancer

The vaccination program against HPV cancer has been expanded. Until now it was only meant for girls. From February, boys can also receive a vaccine against the human papilloma virus. The first invitations will be sent today.

HPV is a highly contagious virus that affects eight out of ten people at some point. The virus can cause cervical cancer, among other things.

Now that more and more is known about all the different forms of cancer that can be caused by HPV, it has been decided to vaccinate boys as well. More and more young men are being diagnosed with penile cancer. Sometimes a penile amputation is necessary to save a life, says Oscar Brouwer, urologist at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital.

“That obviously has a major impact on someone’s life,” says Brouwer. “I often speak to patients who would like to travel back in time for a vaccination, but unfortunately it is too late for them.”

The HPV vaccination is part of the National Immunization Programme. All children receive the invitation for the vaccination in the year that they turn ten.
