/ world today news/ “I cannot agree with the positive assessment of the work of the chairman of the State Agency “National Security”. From the “Kostinbrod” affair, to the trampling of constitutional rules in 2013 and 2014, when DANS served unconstitutional attacks against the head of state, and it comes to the “Chervei” development – we have enough reasons to believe that it is high time for changes to take place in DANS and for this agency to generate security, not scandals,” President Rosen Plevneliev told journalists in Perushtitsa.
“The chairman of DANS and the chief secretary of the Ministry of the Interior are trying. Their replacement will “inflame the opposition, they will again start to think that we are looking for revenge, confrontation”, Prime Minister Borisov said yesterday.
“The assessment and the proposal for the position of the chief secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs after the changes in the Law on the Ministry of Internal Affairs is the responsibility of the government,” the president pointed out.
“Then I will take advantage of my powers by law, but if after more than a year of tapping the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and working with sensitive archives, including using illegal means, the result is an empty folder in DANS, this is a huge scandal,” said Rosen Plevneliev.
The President encouraged the prosecutor’s office and the National Assembly “to go all the way” in clarifying the “Worms” development.
“What we are seeing is unacceptable. We need to show that we learn from our mistakes. I appeal to all institutions involved in the case to come to the end and bear responsibility. The responsibility of the management of DANS is more than visible. I expect action,” the president emphasized.
“I expect this year to see responsible and meaningful reforms – the pension and health reform, in the “Security” and “Energy” sectors, in the water sector, which will pass through the National Assembly,” the president said.
According to Plevneliev, the government’s efforts should also be aimed at preserving the sustainability of public finances and permanently reducing the deficit.
“There are sectors where costs can be optimized. It’s no secret that the Bulgarian energy industry is inefficient and in dire straits. The same is true in the health and justice sectors. That’s why reforms are necessary,” Rosen Plevneliev emphasized again.

What are the main reasons behind President Plevneliev’s concerns regarding the performance of Mr. Thanou as the chairman of the State Agency “National Security” (DANS)?
Thank you for joining us today. We have two guests with us – Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, President of Bulgaria, and Mr. Tsvetan Tsvetanov, a leading opposition figure. We will discuss the recent changes and scandals in the Bulgarian political scene, focusing on the topic of national security and theneed for reforms in various sectors.
First, let’s start with the recent controversy surrounding the dismissal of Mr. Ivan thanou, the chairman of the State Agency “National Security”. President Plevneliev, you have publicly spoken about your concerns regarding Mr. Thanou’s actions. Can you elaborate on these concerns and why you believe changes are needed within DANS?
President Rosen Plevneliev: Thank you for the question. As I said in Perushtitsa, I cannot agree with the positive assessment of Mr. Thanou’s work. From the “Kostinbrod” affair to trampling on constitutional rules in 2013 and 2014, when DANS served unconstitutional attacks against the head of state and the latest “Chervei” development, we have enough reasons to believe that it’s high time for changes to take place in DANS and for this agency to generate security, not scandals.
Mr. Tsvetanov, as a leading opposition figure, what is your take on the president’s comments and the need for changes within DANS?
Tsvetan Tsvetanov: I think the president is right. There have been many alarming incidents involving DANS in the past few years, and it’s clear that there is a need for reform. However, the question remains – who should replace Mr. Thanou and how can we ensure that this person will restore trust in the agency?
Moving on to the topic of reforms, President Plevneliev mentioned several sectors that require immediate attention - the energy sector and the justice system, among others. Mr. Plevneliev, can you discuss your plans for these reforms and how you intend to ensure their implementation?
President Rosen Plevneliev: Yes, indeed. We need to show that we learn from our mistakes. We expect this year to see responsible and meaningful reforms – the pension and health
