Authorities have released new details about the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy who died Saturday after falling from the balcony of an apartment on the 29th floor of a high-rise building in Manhattan.
A preliminary investigation suggests the minor’s death may have been an accident, according to findings shared by two high-ranking law enforcement sources.
The boy fell from the balcony of the apartment around 11:00 a.m.towards a scaffold around the third floor of Taino Towerslocated in 3rd Avenue in Harlem.
Neighbors described a harrowing struggle to reach the toddler, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
Investigators spoke with the boy’s parents, who said they were in the apartment bedroom when the boy fell off the balcony. According to their statements, the sources said that the parents went to look for the boy when they did not hear him playing in the room.
When the boy’s mother went to look for him, she told detectives she saw the balcony netting “moving in the wind.” Sources said she looked over the netting and saw her baby on the scaffolding 26 stories below.
Putting together the statements and evidence gathered at the scene, investigators believe the boy went out onto the balcony and climbed onto a chair to look over the edge when he fell.
An official cause of death has not been concluded. The investigation is ongoing.
