Boy (16) loses hand due to fireworks in Kootwijkerbroek | Barneveld newspaper

KOOTWIJKERBROEK Two boys from Kootwijkerbroek were injured by heavy fireworks at the beginning of New Year’s Eve on arable land on Kerkweg in their hometown. One of them lost a hand, reports the Gelderland-Midden Safety and Health Region. Police say the suspect is a 16-year-old boy. The other, a 17-year-old boy, had injuries to his face.

The boy who lost his hand told emergency services that he had a Cobra in his hand when it exploded. The fireworks incident happened around 6:15 p.m. The two injured teenagers were rushed to hospital in two ambulances. An initially called trauma helicopter was cancelled.

The Kootwijkerbroek fire brigade has provided assistance with the installation of lights, after which the firefighters searched the area in a row for parts of the hand.

According to bystanders, a group of young people had left shortly before the incident, because they thought it was “becoming too dangerous”. The police are investigating the cause.
