The Avalanche Warning Service reported seven avalanches in Tyrol involving people. Other than the two deaths, there were no further casualties or injuries.
The German victim, according to police, is a 16-year-old from Munich who lived in Innsbruck. The boy had gone off-piste with two friends. When the boy fell at an altitude of 2,150 meters, a so-called slab avalanche suddenly occurred, in which a whole piece of the top snow layer came down suddenly. The victim’s friends then alerted the rescue services. The victim was found by a rescue dog two hours later, half a meter under the snow. He was already deceased by then.
An Austrian skier ended up in a slab avalanche near the Widdersberg. Two other winter sports enthusiasts in the area were able to track the man, who was two meters below the surface, using search equipment. However, resuscitation attempts by the emergency services were of no avail.
