Boy (11) Loses Hand, Right Eye In Fireworks Accident, His Doctor Calls For Fireworks Ban | Utrecht

An 11-year-old boy in the central Netherlands has lost a hand and an eye in a fireworks accident.

A doctor at Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital reports on his social media that the hand was not saved after the boy was admitted with serious injuries.

“It is 11pm when my colleague and I are sitting on the completely exploded hand of an 11 year old boy. We’ve looked at all the possible options to fix something, but there seems to be no other option than to amputate the hand with all the fingers.”

It looks like war. Can someone explain to me what we are doing in our country?”

Plastic surgeon Emma Paes writes that the explosion left the boy with a fist up to his wrist. “His right eye has to be removed by an ophthalmologist due to serious injury.” In the WKZ – part of UMC Utrecht – the mood was depressed due to the incident. “It’s 0:00 in the morning. The entire team in the OR is focused and, in his own way, feeling the pain and sorrow of this child and his family. What should we say to each other now: Happy New Year?

Question marks

The doctor questions the fireworks that are set off in our country. “I go to the parking lot, it’s still dark but in the distance the sky lights up and I hear loud banging. It looks like war. Can someone explain to me what we are doing in our country?”

Paes joins earlier calls from colleagues to introduce a nationwide ban on fireworks.

It is not known where the accident occurred in the province of Utrecht and what exactly happened.
