The International Boxing Association (IBA) will award Italy’s Angela Carini a $50,000 cash prize despite losing her round of 16 bout to Algeria’s Iman Kelif in 46 seconds at the Paris Olympics.
Karin was retired in the first round after the Algerian champion, who is at the center of a controversy over her gender, hit the Italian with a barrage of punches.
The IBA, which was stripped of its international recognition by the International Olympic Committee last year, announced that Carini will receive $50,000, her federation another $25,000 and her coach an additional $25,000.
“I don’t understand why they killed women’s boxing,” said IBA president Umar Kremlev. “Only eligible athletes should compete in the ring for safety reasons. I couldn’t look at her tears.”
It is noted that the awarding of a monetary prize to Carini by the IBA made a strong impression on the Italian Olympic Committee, with the representative of the IOC, Mark Adams saying:
“IBA’s decision to give Angela Carini a prize money says a lot about the credibility of its people, just look at their comments about the International Olympic Committee and France. We don’t want to draw attention to them.”
