The 35-year-old Irish woman won in New York with 2-1 judges’ votes (96-93, 97-93, 94-96).

In front of a sell-out crowd of 19,187 at Madison Square Garden, it was the first women’s main event in the venerable arena’s 140-year history. Other cities are more progressive and have long featured women’s fights as the main attraction.

“Look what we just did!” exulted a drained Taylor (35) a few minutes after her narrow point victory over Amanda Serrano: “We sold out Madison Square Garden. The biggest fight in women’s boxing history.”

Taylor is still world champion of the major associations WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO in lightweight. The 33-year-old Serrano had won nine world titles in seven different weight classes in her career, setting a world record. Taylor is now undefeated in 21 professional fights, while Serrano has 45 wins in 45 fights, 30 of which ended by KO

The fight was largely even. “I had to bang it all out,” Taylor said. The London 2012 Olympic gold medalist and five-time world amateur champion went down once in the fifth of ten rounds, but recovered. Both agreed on a rematch while they were still in the ring.
