A federal court in Seattle has sentenced Gary Bowser to 40 months in prison, the US Department of Justice writes in a press release.
The 52-year-old Canadian has been Nintendo’s number one enemy as the face of Team Xecuter, an organization that has developed and sold pirate chips for the Nintendo Switch and other game consoles, thereby pulling in millions.
Bowser lives in the Dominican Republic but was arrested and extradited to the United States in 2020. Two other people have also been charged, one from France and one from China, but both are still at large.
In a separate press release, Nintendo thanks the authorities for the thorough investigation behind the indictment and the conviction. Last year, Bowser agreed to pay an additional SEK 90 million in damages to Nintendo to complete a separate civil lawsuit.
Gary Bowser is not related to Nintendo of America CEO Doug Bowser. None of them, despite the Nintendo connection, has anything to do with Mario’s fiery arch-enemy.
