He is still between life and death. Wednesday March 2, 2022 around 10:15 a.m., Yvan Colonna was violently assaulted while he was in the middle of a sports session in the weight room at Arles prison.
According to the first elements of the investigation, Yvan Colonna was a victim of strangulation with bare hands, then with a suffocationreports the public prosecutor Laurent Gumbau.
Discovered unconscious by a supervisor
It was a supervisor who discovered him lifeless. When help arrived, Yvan Colonna was medicalized on the spot while he was “in cardiac and respiratory arrest”, specifies the prosecutor. But the resuscitators made it possible to restart cardiac activity.
As Mr. Cormier confirmed to News Marseille yesterday, the victim is currently in “post-anoxic coma”. First transferred to Arles hospital, Yvan Colonna was then moved to a hospital in Marseille at the end of the day.
“No improvement or deterioration”, told AFP Me Patrice Spinosi, his lawyer and that of the Colonna family insisting on the fact that he was not in a state of brain death.
The attacker, convicted of terrorism
Still according to information from the prosecutor, the inmate who assaulted Yvan Colonna was sentenced principally to nine years’ imprisonment on the count of “criminal association with a view to preparing an act of terrorism”.
The co-detainee had been serving his sentence at the central house in Arles since October 17, 2019, from the Nantes prison center. For the time being, “the motive for the attack is unknown”.
“We are obviously going to do everything necessary for the truth to be revealed about this attack on Mr. Colonna”, assured Thursday on France Inter the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, noting the “tempered remarks” of elected officials. Corsican “despite the difficulties”.
“I obviously believe that everyone is very shocked by this story. I want to have a thought for the family of Mr. Colonna, I also want as Minister of the Interior to have a thought for Mrs. Erignac and the Erignac family, ”he added.
Anger from Corsica
Anger quickly spread from Corsica where it had long been called for reconciliation in an island prison. The first requests were made by Yvan Colonna, who is placed under the status of “particularly reported prisoner” (DPS), which prevents him from being incarcerated in the Corsican prison of Borgo, but all of which were rejected.
“The state was legally responsible for Yvan Colonna’s safety. If he dies, the prison administration and the entire political hierarchy on which it depends will have to be held to account,” his family said on Wednesday.
The president of the executive council of Corsica, Gilles Simeoni, also considered that the state bears “an overwhelming responsibility” in this aggression.
Now 61 years old, the shepherd and independence activist had been arrested in July 2003 for the murder of the prefect Claude Erignac, after four years of cavalry in the Corsican maquis.
Sentenced to lifetime sentencehe always denied the facts.
His attacker is in police custody as part of an investigation by the judicial police for “attempted murder”.
