The verdict is in. Danyl Nadji, 25, was sentenced this afternoon by the Bouches-du-Rhône Assize Court to 12 years of criminal imprisonment for attempted murder of a young man of the same age, on January 9, 2021 in Marseille and acquisition of narcotics. He had been on trial since Monday afternoon for the facts, which occurred following a road conflict.
Although he admitted the shooting, the accused repeated for three days that he had no intention of killing. In this sense, his lawyer Mr. Fabrice Giletta had pleaded this morning in favor of a reclassification as intentional violence, which he did not obtain. Danyl Nadji, whose criminal record already included eight convictions – notably for violent offenses – risked life imprisonment.
The Attorney General Christophe Raffin had requested this morning a sentence of “12 or 13 years of criminal imprisonment“, considering that the murderous intent was beyond doubt.”I never wanted that, I greatly regret my action“, the accused reiterated at the beginning of the afternoon before the court retired to deliberate.
On the evening of the events, Danyl Nadji was driving with his girlfriend on Boulevard Saint-Marcel. The couple had consumed alcohol and laughing gas. As another driver tried to pass him, he swerved to stop him, noticed headlights flashing in his rearview mirror and stopped to confront him. The opposing driver then hit the couple. A few dozen minutes later, the two opposing motorists found themselves on the same boulevard.
Danyl Nadji then grabbed a handgun – which he claims to have taken from his victim, a version that the victim disputes – and shot his opponent several times, injuring him in the legs and one arm. The police quickly caught up with the shooter, the scene having been partly captured by video surveillance cameras.
