Bottlenecks – German Red Cross: Blood donations have fallen massively

A spokesman for the German Red Cross told the AFP news agency that blood donations had fallen sharply before the summer holidays. There are currently up to 30 percent fewer donations, so the reserves are almost exhausted. The DRK sees the reasons for this, among other things, in a high demand for blood products in the hospitals, where many operations that were postponed due to the corona pandemic are currently being made up for. At the same time, many people are currently catching up on vacation trips that they had to cancel or postpone during the pandemic. As a result, there are fewer blood donations.

According to the DRK, around three percent of the population in Germany regularly donate blood. In order to secure the supply of blood preparations, according to the information, there would have to be twice as many.
