Because Marcelo Ebrard has a problem. His main opponent in the race for the candidacy is Claudia Sheinbaum, the head of the Government of Mexico City. That means that Claudia can walk in the streets, surrounded by people, every day. She can turn any of her activities into a rally where they sing “President, President!”
More importantly, Claudia does work, public policy, opens Pilares, inaugurates transport routes, puts up Wi-Fi, increases social programs, holds press conferences every day, and all of this she can boast of legally using the city’s social communication budget. Nothing bad. If you organize a boxing class you have the drones and the equipment to make a spectacular video. You can invite Silvio Rodríguez or the Blue Angels to the Zócalo and it is an act of government. Of course, show it off enough in networks. All of this weighs in the polls.
If your job is to be chancellor, it is not easy to be popular in the polls… Your greetings with foreign leaders or your visits to embassies and consulates or your strategies to deal with the US or your agreements on climate change or migration —let’s be honest— they are not very popular with voters.
That is the problem with surveys as a method in such an early process. That to do well in a survey, and more so in these times, you have to become a TikTok character.
