Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt have jointly started the first stage of implementing the constitutional article on nursing. After the legal basis comes into force in July, both cantons will provide training grants in the nursing sector.

This training initiative will run for eight years, as the two health directors Thomi Jourdan (EVP) and Lukas Engelberger (centre) announced to the media on Thursday in the Hofmatt retirement and nursing home in Münchenstein.

In addition to meeting the federal requirement, i.e. promoting the tertiary sector, the two Basels also support training to become a health professional EFZ (FaGe), as Jourdan said. “After all, this apprenticeship is an important feeder for higher education in the nursing sector.”

Anyone who wants to study nursing at one of the two Basel universities of applied sciences or universities of applied sciences can now apply for individual support payments of 24,000 francs per year for full-time training. Part-time students are entitled to 18,000 francs per year of training. Anyone who has parental care and maintenance obligations is entitled to an additional 10,000 francs per child per year.

Support for training companies

In addition, the two cantons support training companies. The contributions benefit both tertiary education and FaGe apprenticeships. Companies receive up to 300 francs per week of work in the HF and FH areas and a maximum of 1,800 francs per FaGe apprenticeship year completed.

The eight-year training initiative will cost around 50 million francs in Basel-Stadt, Engelberger said. The federal government will cover around 20 million of this. In Basel-Landschaft, it will cost around 36 million, with the federal government contributing a maximum of 50 percent, according to the Department of Economic Affairs and Health.

Care initiative as origin

The training offensive goes back to the nursing initiative, which was adopted by the people and the cantons on November 28, 2021. Among other things, this requires the federal government and the cantons to guarantee that enough qualified nursing professionals are available.
