Botass wins Russia’s Grand Prix; Hamilton fails to reach Schumacher record due to punishment / Article / LSM.lv

Finnish driver Walter Botass from the Mercedes team celebrated the victory in the tenth stage of the First Formula One (F-1) World Championship season in Russia in Sochi on Sunday – the Russian Grand Prix.

Boot’s teammate Lewis Hamilton started the race from the pole position, defending the first place in the start. Meanwhile, Botass passed Red Bull pilot Max Verstapen, climbing from third to second.

Due to a couple of accidents, the pilots spent the next five laps after the start behind the safety car. While the yellow flags were hanging on the track, Hamilton received the news that he had been sentenced to two five-second penalties for illegal start training before the race.

The British served the sentence after the planned pit stop and on the 17th lap returned to the tenth position on the track. The leader was Botass, who defended the first position until the finish, Verstapen finished second, and Hamilton finished third.

Hamilton has won 90 victories in his career, which is one less than the legendary Michael Schumacher.

Serhio Peress (“Racing Point”) won fourth place on Sunday, Daniel Rikjardo (“Renault”) was fifth, and Charles Clecker (“Ferrari”) finished first. This was followed by Esteban Ocon (“Ferrari”), the eighth was the home of Daniel Quyat (“Alpha Tauri”), followed by teammate Pierre Gasli, but the last at the point was Alexander Albon (“Red Bull”).

Hamilton, who has accumulated 205 points in the ten stages and is the overall leader, is convincingly facing his seventh title. Botass, who has 161 points, is behind the court with almost two victories, Verstapens is third with 128 points, and Lendo Noriss follows with 65 points.

A record number of races were planned this season (22), but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers are now approving 17 stages.

Last season, Hamilton was crowned world champion, triumphing for the sixth time in his career and for the third time in a row.
