Botafogo’s Comeback Victory Against Guaraní-PAR in Copa Sudamericana

After a bad first half, the Botafogo was much better in the final stage and won the Guaraní-PAR 2-1 comeback this Wednesday (2), at Estádio Nilton Santos, in the first game of the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. The two teams face each other again next Wednesday, in Asunción.

The team led by Bruno Lage started the match with some preserved starters, but the entrances of Segovinha and Tiquinho Soares at halftime changed the panorama of the game. Glorioso now play for a return tie at Defensores del Chaco to advance to the quarterfinals.

The game

After just three minutes, Guaraní-PAR opened the scoring: in a good plot on the right side, Moreira rolled into the area and Romeo Benítez completed it alone to make it 1-0. Botafogo was far from being the Brasileirão team, and the Paraguayans scored again at 12, but Néstor Camacho’s beautiful goal was annulled.

To get an idea, Glorioso’s first dangerous finish only came out in the 36th minute: Marlon Freitas kicked with style from outside the area and the ball hit the crossbar. Six minutes later, Guaraní-PAR arrived with danger again, in a great finish by Néstor Camacho that went close to the crossbar.

Unsatisfied with the team’s performance in the first half, Bruno Lage returned from the break promoting the additions of Segovinha and Tiquinho Soares, and Botafogo was another team. At 12 minutes, Eduardo almost equalized, but the goalkeeper made a great save. Soon after, Tiquinho corrected and Eduardo submitted with a bicycle, and Muñoz saved again with a defense.

The alvinegro goal was maturing and left in style. In the 20th minute, after a corner kick from the right, Guaraní’s defense moved away and Hugo took the leftover from outside the area and hit a kick in the angle, of rare happiness: 1 to 1.

With Guaraní cornered, Botafogo went all out to seek the comeback. At the 32nd minute, Tiquinho Soares dominated at the edge of the area and shot dangerously. Afterwards, Segovinha kicked, Júnior Santos deflected and the ball skimmed the post. And, at 42 minutes, Júnior Santos suffered a penalty from Romero. Tiquinho Soares hit the middle of the goal and turned: BOTAFOGO 2 to 1.

Botafogo next games
