Peter Bosz is very disappointed that he failed to enforce Champions League football on Saturday with Bayer Leverkusen. ‘Die Werkself’ is the best number five ever in the Bundesliga, but has to make do with a ticket for the Europa League.
Leverkusen won 1-0 against FSV Mainz in the last round, but saw competitor Borussia Mönchengladbach at home against Hertha BSC also take three points: 2-1.
“We got 63 points, which is a lot. Last season, 58 points were enough to qualify for the Champions League,” said Bosz, who broke the record with Leverkusen of Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV, who in 2002 and 2009 with 61 points came fifth.
Bosz has mixed feelings about the Bundesliga season. “All in all, we had a good second half of the season, but we also know that we missed it a few times in the past few weeks.”
After the Bundesliga resumed in May, Leverkusen suffered costly defeats against VfL Wolfsburg (1-4), Bayern Munich (2-4) and Hertha BSC (2-0) and played a 1-1 draw at Schalke 04. It cost the club’s coveted fourth place.
Bosz and Leverkusen are still in the race for two prizes this season. The club is in the final of the DFB-Pokal against Bayern Munich and is on its way to the quarterfinals in the Europa League.
