The last time the Yankees had been swept by the Boston Red Sox in New York, they still had Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira in the infield. That was June 7, 8 and 9, 2011. However, this Sunday, they completed a nightmare weekend for the Bronx.
Xander Bogaerts singled off Luis Cessa in the 10th inning and drove in two decisive runs for a 6-5 victory, in the middle of a game that sent off a pair of Yankees coaches, while Boston sent off a pair of balls over the fence through the bats of Alex Verdugo and Marwin González.
Last year, the Yankees beat the Red Sox nine of ten games, who also had a row of 11 losses at Yankee Stadium, however, this weekend, the Boston troop came to send New York and improved their record to 15-6 specifically against rivals in the AL East Division.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have lost four straight games and stumbled in five of seven games this week against Tampa and Boston, dropping to the second to last place in their sector. On this occasion, they spoiled a good start for Domingo Germán, who was left without a decision. Matt Barnes was the winner.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, are still in the middle of a great season and are fighting a fierce battle against Tampa for the top of the Division. This weekend, they had a great performance from Bogaerts, who drove in three races last night, but Rafael Devers, González and Kike Hernández also excelled with key hits.
Three Winker home runs
Jesse Winker hit three home runs Sunday, including one that broke a tie at seven and led the Reds to an 8-7 win over the Cardinals, who were swept in the four-game series. Winker reached 17 boards and drove in six runs in the challenge, which resulted in a shrapnel duel.
On May 21, Winker had also hit three home runs in a game against the Brewers. This time it had to thunder really hard, because the Cardinals erased a 0-7 deficit in the sixth, thanks to the batting of Nolan Arenado (4-4) and Paul Goldschmidt (5-3), but Winker ended up burying them.
The Braves defeated the Dodgers 4-2 with Max Fried (3-3) on the hill. The left-hander beat Trevor Bauer (6-4), despite a homer and two RBIs by Albert Pujols (9). Bauer pitched six innings for three runs, but Fried only allowed one touchdown in the same span. Will Smith made 11 saves.
Luis Garcia (5-3) struck out eight and gave up just one run in six innings to lead the Astros to a 6-3 win over the Blue Jays. José Altuve (9) and Chas McCormick (3) backed him up with home runs, as did Yuli Gurriel, who went 3-for-3. Steven Matz (6-3) was the underdog.
Corbin Burnes pitched seven runless innings and struck out 13 to lead the Brewers to a 2-0 win over Arizona. Tyrone Taylor (6) and Daniel Robertson (2) produced the runs for Milwaukee, while the Diamondbacks suffered their 17th consecutive loss away from home.
Triple play de Minnesota
The Twins defeated the Royals 2-1, in a challenge in which they completed a triple play on Nicky López’s touch. The triple play was initiated by Miguel Sanó, who took off the touch and eliminated Jarrod Dyson in the second, while Cam Callagher was struck down in the initial. The route was 3-6-4.
The Mets relied on solid work from Marcus Stroman (5-4), who dodged four no-run hits and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings, to beat the Padres 6-2. James McCann (6) and Dominic Smith (4) backed him up with home runs. Fernando Tatis Jr. had no hits in three at-bats.
Cuban Yandy Díaz took the fence and drove in three runs, for Tampa Bay to beat the Rangers 7-1, while Patrick Wisdom went to the street twice and the Cubs beat the Giants 4-3. The White Sox, meanwhile, went over Detroit 3-0 with Dylan Cease in the box.
