The company specialized in robotics Boston Dynamics has shown his bipedal robot Atlas autonomously performing complex parkour exercises, from jumping to overcoming obstacles, even being capable of doing somersaults.
The American company has assured that it is the first time that your atlas robot has been able to successfully complete an obstacle course complexes similar to sports such as parkour, as reported by Boston Dynamics in a statement.
In a video published on Tuesday, the company showed two Atlas robots, bipedal and with human-inspired anatomy, performing exercises on a series of wooden platforms, including climbing steps, jumping, overcoming obstacles, walking on a narrow strip. and do somersaults.
The two robots were able to overcome the obstacle course successfully and in a synchronized way – only with a small error at the end in the celebration gesture – although the company explained that this required several falls of the robot that it has also shown in another video.
Boston Dynamics has explained that, although actions of its robots such as somersaults will probably never have commercial utility, its goal is “to be able to perform the same range of movements and physical tasks as humans.”
For the company, parkour was a good example of an exercise to develop with its Atlas robot, as it requires balancing a variety of movements and being able to link them together.
Although the device is still far from being fully autonomous, the goal is to “create a solid foundation to address the next set of research problems.”
