The Boston Celtics continue to be irresistible at home at the start of the NBA season. Monday at TD Garden, they won for the fifth time in as many matches played in front of their home crowd, this time against the New York Knicks (114-98).
Boston had already beaten the Big Apple franchise (108-104) on October 25 for its entry into the NBA season. New York’s winning streak has come to an end. The Knicks remained on three consecutive victories. On Monday, they played without RJ Barrett, their leading scorer, who was suffering from a migraine.
Boston escapes at the end of the match
The Celtics’ victory took shape in the last quarter. Each team had their chance beforehand. In the first period, New York had widened a small gap (37-29, 17th), however quickly filled by their opponent. Same scenario in the third quarter: Boston had escaped (84-76), but the Knicks quickly came back to score.
Seven minutes from the buzzer, the Massachusetts franchise once again distanced itself, on a three-point shot from Jrue Holiday (98-88) and, this time, New York was unable to react. After beating Brooklyn and Toronto, the Boston Celtics won a third consecutive victory.
Tatum scores 17 points in the final quarter
They owe this victory above all to Jayson Tatum, author of 35 points (13/23 shooting including 5/12 three-pointers), including 17 in the last quarter alone. Jaylen Brown and Kirstaps Porzingis were also decisive, with 22 and 21 points respectively.
In the ranks of the Knicks, in the absence of Barrett, Jalen Brunson (26 pts) and Julius Randle (25) held the team together. Evan Fournier, who has not yet played this season, was not on the match sheet this time, for personal reasons.
Shock in Philadelphia on Wednesday
The Boston Celtics are second in the Eastern Conference. After their great victory against New York, they will now prepare for a serious clash on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Sixers, the conference leaders. This will be the second match of the season between the two teams. Last week, the 76ers won at home (106-103).
The same day, the New York Knicks, eighth in the Eastern Conference, will visit the Atlanta Hawks.
