Boston Celtics extend early with Josh Richardson

The Boston Celtics have agreed to an early contract extension with Josh Richardson. The 27-year-old came to Boston via trade just a few weeks ago, and the Celts will now tie him to the team until 2023.

This is reported by Shams Charania (The Athletic). After the end of the season, Richardson had drawn his $ 11.6 million player option for the coming season. Then the Dallas Mavericks shipped him to Boston for Big Man Moses Brown and a trade exception.

There the winger will now receive a new contract for another year for 12.4 million, so he will not be back on the market until summer 2023. For Richardson de Celtics are the fourth team in four years, Dallas acquired the defensive wing in the offseason 2020 in a trade with Seth Curry of the Philadelphia 76ers.

But in the Mavs jersey, Richardson could not build on old achievements. His 12.1 points and 3.3 rebounds at 42.7 percent from the field and 33.0 percent from downtown were his worst return since he started in Miami in 2017.

Boston is now hoping that Richardson will find his three-pointer again and become a reliable 3-and-D player. With this deal, the Celtics have already signed the third early contract extension this summer, after Marcus Smart and Robert Williams had also been tied long-term.
