The Boston Celtics are in the Conference Finals for the third time in the past four years. In Game 7, coach Brad Stevens’ team kept their nerves in an exciting final phase, also because Marcus Smart showed once again that he is perhaps the best little defender in the NBA. Here are the highlights of the game.
In the end it was another tremendous game. The Celtics led deep in the fourth quarter with ten points, but as so often in the series, the Raptors bit their way back into the game. Daniel Theis sat on the bench for a long time with 5 fouls before coach Brad Stevens let the Celtics anchor again a good 90 seconds before the end.
It took 11 seconds for Theis to be back on the bench after Kyle Lowry cleverly sought contact with the German on the drive and got two free throws. The Raptors leader scored both, the Canadians were only two points behind (87:89). On the other hand, Jayson Tatum forgave and Toronto switched over in a flash after the long rebound.
Norman Powell had free rein and was able to level the game, but Marcus Smart appeared out of nowhere and nailed the lay-up attempt to the board with brute force, as if he were LeBron James himself. It was the play of the game, even if Tatum’s offensive rebound a few seconds later after two free throws from rookie Grant Williams were no less important.
Boston Celtics: Kemba raves about Smart
“This block was incredible,” said Celtics guard Kemba Walker in astonishment after the game. “That’s why he’s First Team All-Defense. He does great things game after game. Things that are often not noticed. But I’ll tell you one thing: He plays better than anyone else in the back.”
This hard-fought series couldn’t have ended otherwise. It was not decided by offense, but by little things like this block or Tatum’s rebound, exactly to the taste of Bulldog Smart. “I enjoyed every moment because we played against a great Raptors team,” said Boston’s noble defender, paying tribute to the reigning champion.
Tatum also got into the same notch: “You showed a lot of heart and made sure that we got absolutely nothing for free. We want to become champions and it was clear that we would meet so much resistance on our way.”
Boston Celtics: Now the Miami Heat are waiting
In the coming round it will certainly not be easier. The Miami Heat is a team that, as a 5-seed in the Milwaukee Bucks, knocked the top team in the East with MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo out of the competition. “It won’t be easier,” warned coach Brad Stevens. “They play completely different and the way they play is unique.”
The Celtics and the Heat have met three times in playoff history – three times in a row between 2010 and 2012. In 2010 the Celtics still had the upper hand, but in the following years the heat for the Big Three consisting of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh prevailed.
