BOSTON (Reuters) – US federal justice has overturned on appeal the death sentence of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, found guilty of the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured 264 in April 2013.

This student of Chechen origin was sentenced to death in May 2015 by a jury in a federal court in Boston. He was convicted of placing two homemade bombs with his older brother Tamerlan near the finish line of the marathon on April 15, 2013. He had also been convicted of the death of a gunshot police officer.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police in suburban Boston.
