Former Olympique de Marseille and Grenoble player, Boštjan Cesar (38) looks back on his career in France. A striking face of Ligue 1 at the end of the 2000s, the current under-19 coach of Slovenia tells us of his attachment to his former clubs, between La Canebière and Isère.

How are your first steps as a coach going?

It’s quite special, in a good sense of the word, to be on the other side of the field. From now on, it is I who will give the instructions and I am very impatient. I worked hard to get my diplomas from UEFA so it’s really a relief. In my opinion, the message gets better among young people and it is easier to instill in them its ideas and methods. We are to some extent the guarantors of their success, because we launch them into the professional bath.

Before becoming a coach, France discovered you as a player at OM in 2005. Can you tell us about your arrival?

I was playing for Dinamo Zagreb, and my last season was really great. I have received several offers, including from Rangers and Celtic. I couldn’t make up my mind, I had a rich problem. One day, I received a call from the Olympique de Marseille. They were looking for a “solid” defender. Coincidentally, that summer, the Croatian league had organized a match between a team all stars of the championship and Bayern Munich. After the meeting, I therefore spoke with José Anigo. We talked, and the next day, I gave my consent to sign. We must also underline the role of Josip Skoblar in my transfer. What do you keep from your first match under the Marseille colors?
