Bossa Studios Layoffs: Surgeon Simulator Developer Forced to Cut a Third of Staff

The video game industry is currently characterized by studios being forced to make the difficult decision to lay off employees. The latest studio to announce a round of layoffs is Surgeon Simulator developer Bossa Studios, which has had to lay off a third of its staff.

According to GamesIndustry.biz 19 people should have been made redundant, and these are “mainly in QA and production roles, in addition to non-UK staff.” The studio will still have 40 employees.

In a statement, Bossa founder Henrique Olifiers says: “As a result of this blue moon situation, we had to make the difficult decision to reorganize the studio to reflect the situation we find ourselves in at the end of the year, and focus all our efforts on Lost Skies.”This means that we are in the heartbreaking situation that we have to lay off about a third of the studio – among them some of our closest colleagues.

“While we do our best to support them, we would appreciate any help we can get from our industry peers to spread the word about these great people – or better yet, hire them as part of your team. It’s hard to find a better game developer than one of these Bossians, and we go without hesitation to vouch for them.

“We often say that making games is hard, but nothing is harder than seeing people you admire get fired,” adds Olifiers. “Ultimately, we did our very best to avoid ending up in this situation, and we are truly sorry for where we have ended up.”

The British developer Bossa Studios was established in 2010 and has, among other things, worked on titles such as I Am Bread, Surgeon Simulator and I Am Fish. The remaining employees of the studio are currently working on the title Lost Skies, a cooperative survival game for 1-6 players. You can find out more about Lost Skies on the studio’s official website her.
