Sexual harassment experienced by an employee of a Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The scandal went viral and is currently under investigation.
A female Alibaba employee recounts the harassment she experienced via a microblogging website China Weibo. Alibaba has confirmed that it will not tolerate such acts.
“Alibaba Group has a zero-tolerance policy against sexual misconduct, and ensures a safe workplace for all employees. This is Alibaba’s top priority,” an Alibaba spokesperson said.
Alibaba management has also formed an internal task force to investigate cases of sexual harassment in their work environment, where the police in the Chinese city of Jinan have also started a similar investigation.
“We have suspended relevant parties suspected of violating our policies and values, and have established a special internal task force to investigate this matter and support the ongoing police investigation.” he said.
Viral Stories of Harassment on Chinese Social Media
The story of sexual harassment stems from the upload of a female employee on Weibo. The Alibaba employee told the story of the harassment he experienced while on a business trip.
The woman who did not reveal her identity said the incident occurred on Tuesday (27/7). At that time, his boss insisted on a business trip with him.
Then they met with a client in the city of Jinan, about 900 kilometers from Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou. During the meeting, the client kissed the victim.
At that time, the victim was drunk and found himself naked in a hotel room. Unfortunately, the victim does not remember what happened the previous night.
The victim also checked the CCTV footage he obtained from the hotel. Seen the boss entered the room four times throughout the night.
Upon his return to Hangzhou, the victim reported what happened to HRD on August 2. The victim asked his boss to be fired. At first the HRD agreed but the report was not followed up.
