Bosnia-Italy, how important it is for Azzurri to win

The Azzurri, winning tonight, would find themselves fighting for a title that has been missing for too long. But a success would also bring us back to the top 10 of the ranking and give us a hand for the groups of Qatar 2022

Nations League “Final four”, world playoffs practically insured, “reduced” group towards Qatar 2022, possible return to the top 10 of the Fifa ranking, organization of a great tournament. Italy-Bosnia is worth more than just qualification. Provided you win.

1 – blue to the final four of nations league

“And now everyone will say: we won Davis” is one of the best titles of the old Guerino, referring to the controversy surrounding the participation in the 1976 final in Chile by that democrat from Pinochet. Issues disappeared with the Italian cup. The much-maligned Nations, one of the most beautiful and balanced tournaments that exists, could give us back the pleasure of playing a success that has been missing for too long (and perhaps cancel the criticism). The last tournament won? The World Cup in 2006. Then finalists at the Euro 2012. That’s it. If the blues beat Bosnia they are in “final four”. Between European (July) and Nations (October) it could be a good restart.

We are seeded in the draw for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers (on 7 December) because we are among the top 10 Europeans in the FIFA ranking. With 55 national teams involved, 5 groups of 6 nationals and 5 groups of 5 will be drawn. The four finalists are destined for groups of 5 to leave the Nations dates free.

3 – almost insured world playoffs

Another small advantage from a global perspective. The 10 winners of the 10 groups will go straight to Qatar, you know. The other 3 Europeans (in total there are 13) will come out of the double playoff between the 10 runners-up and the 2 “best winners of the groups of Nations not yet qualified”. In short. If Italy did not finish first in the world group (qualified), and not even second (playoff), it would have very high chances of playing the playoffs as a winner of the Serie A group of Nations.

4 – organization of a final phase

Italia 90 is far away. Since then Italy has organized the final phase of the Euro Under 21 (2019) and will host the inaugural, two other matches of the blue group and a quarter of the next European. Now everything is ready: semifinals on 6 and 7 October (Turin and Milan), final 10 probably at San Siro. What a tournament: Italy, France, Spain and one between Belgium and Denmark (draw on 3 December). Then assault on the Euro 2028 for which we want to apply, even if relations with UEFA are not at their best today.

5 – back in the top 10 of the fifa ranking

This is perhaps the most significant news. By beating Bosnia, we are playing with Denmark and Argentina for the chance to regain 10th place in the Fifa rankings, all on the edge of decimals. We have been out of the top 10 since August 2016.
