Bosnia is on the verge of disintegration – UN representative

Eufor soldiers conduct drills in Sarajevo

High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt said that he sees the threat of the country’s disintegration in recent events.

The representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, warned in the UN report that the country is in imminent danger of disintegration and there is a real prospect of a return to conflict. It is reported by The Guardian.

Christian Schmidt argues that if Serb separatists carry out their threat to rebuild their own army by dividing the national military forces in two, large numbers of UN peacekeeping forces will have to be sent back to stop the country’s slide into a new war.

Currently, international peacekeeping duties in Bosnia are entrusted to the EU Eufor force of 700 people. NATO maintains its official headquarters in Sarajevo.

The annual mandates of both organizations will be renewed this week at the UN Security Council. In his first report since taking office in August, Schmidt warned that Bosnia is facing “the greatest existential threat of the post-war period.”

It was previously reported that military leadership of Bosnia and Herzegovina and representatives of the US Embassy in May solemnly met the participants of the phase of NATO’s largest exercises Defender Europe 21.
