Dredger and maritime service provider Boskalis no longer sends its ships through the Red Sea for fear of attacks by Houthi rebels. This is reported by CEO Peter Berdowski, who says that it is “an order” not to sail via that route anymore.
In recent weeks, Boskalis ships that were actually supposed to go via the Suez Canal have already been diverted. Much other shipping also no longer passes through the Red Sea. Many container shipping companies sail their ships around Africa. This causes freight to arrive in Europe with delays, because the route is much longer.
The Red Sea and the Suez Canal are on an important route for international shipping. Mainly goods made in China or Bangladesh, for example, are transported to Europe via the Red Sea.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen support the Palestinians in Gaza and therefore mainly attack Western ships. Several ships have been hit by missiles in recent weeks. The rebels have also hijacked some ships.
