He had already been nominated by an eight-member confidential committee as the new chairman of the KNWU cycling association, but now it is also official. Former politician Wouter Bos is the successor of Marc van den Tweel, who has been general director of sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF since 1 October.
“We currently have a fantastic generation at the top that, for example, provided a lot of medals in Tokyo. It is now our task to maintain or even improve that level,” Bos said on the cycling federation’s website.
“That means a lot of attention for facilities, young talent, diversity and for both the more classic and more recent branches of cycling. Every cyclist knows about trial and error and keep going. Even a fanatic leisure cyclist like me can participate in that a bit And administratively it will probably be no different.”
Bos is already looking ahead to the upcoming Olympic Games, in Paris in three years’ time. “We are already working on that. Was Joop Zoetemelk wrong: Paris is not far, but it is getting closer very quickly!”
Political career
After a career in business, Bos became a member of the House of Representatives in 1998 on behalf of the PvdA. As political leader of the Labor Party, he was Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister. Bos left politics in 2010, although he was still involved as an informateur in 2012 in the establishment of the second Rutte cabinet.
Since then, he has been a partner at KPMG consultancy and chairman of the Board of Directors of the VU University Medical Center. As an avid Feyenoord fan, he was also a board member of the Giovanni van Bronckhorst Foundation.
