Borussia Mönchengladbach lost the friendly against Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen in Ankum 2-4 (2-0). Despite the defeat, coach Jonas Spengler’s team showed a good performance. A draw or even a win would have been well deserved. In the final phase of the game, however, the promoted team in the 2nd Bundesliga ran out of breath – Bremen also went into the game with a much larger squad and brought in a lot of fresh strength at the break.
“We played a really good game and were evenly matched. We then lost the game at the back by conceding unnecessary goals,” Spengler summed up. After a long ball from goalkeeper Luisa Palmen, Emily Tichelkamp (34th) scored to make it 1-0. A ball win by Kristina Bartsch made it 2-0 a little later when Bartsch pushed through to newcomer Laura Radke (35th) and she scored the second goal for Borussia. “We were in a good position and didn’t allow many chances,” said Spengler. His team had other good actions, but did not finish dangerously.
At the break, the strength dwindled a bit. Nevertheless, the Mönchengladbach women were able to defend the result with a lot of passion. In the final phase of the game, however, goals from Saskia Matheis (71′), Lina Hausicke (79′), Maja Sternrad (81′) and Lisa Josten (87′) sealed the 2:4 defeat of the second division team. Coach Spengler was happy with his team despite the defeat: “I’m very happy with the way we played, regardless of the result. It was a good test game with a great water level message where we stand. Now we have to get the last few grains so that we can do well in the 70th to 90th minutes”.
The FV Mönchengladbach team also suffered a defeat. Fortuna Sittard made a guest appearance in the Rheydt campus park. The third-placed Erendivisie traveled with the 121-times Belgium international and captain Tessa Wullaert and other national players.
The favorite from Sittard was dominant from the start and eventually won 6-0. In the fifth minute of the game, Wullaert hit the far corner from an acute angle to give her team a 1-0 lead. Sittard added two more goals before the break. Although the FV defended selflessly, they could not prevent three more goals in the second half.
“First of all, we are grateful to have hosted such a team. It’s a great experience, especially for our young team, to have played against national players who were at the European Championships in England last year,” says FV coach Marco Ketelaer. “Ultimately, we ran out of grains towards the end, which was certainly due to the state of preparation, since we were currently working intensively during the week, especially in the athletic area. That’s why I’m satisfied with the performance overall, although I would of course have wished for more relief and penetrating power up front,”
