Borussia Dortmund – FC Heidenheim 2: 2 (2: 0)
Tor: 1:0 Brandt (7.), 2:0 Can (15./HE), 2:1 Dinkci (61.), 2:2 Kleindienst (82./FE)
The essentials in brief: Disgrace instead of a mandatory victory, first crisis instead of the lead in the table: Borussia Dortmund has given up a victory against promoted team 1. FC Heidenheim that they thought was certain and is going into the international break in the Bundesliga with a bad feeling. At the debut of Bundesliga top scorer Niclas Füllkrug, who was substituted on in the 78th minute, BVB only managed a 2-2 (2-0) draw against newcomer Heidenheim despite a lightning start and also disappointed in the fourth competitive game of the season. Heidenheim, on the other hand, scored the historic first point in the Bundesliga on matchday 3.
Julian Brandt (7th) and the new BVB captain Emre Can (15th, hand penalty) had provided an actually reassuring lead early on. After many wasted chances, at the latest after the connection goal by Eren Dinkci (61st), the big fear started. A penalty kick from Tim Kleindienst (82nd) after a chaotic video check finally sealed the surprise. The fact that BVB was unbeaten on the first three match days for the first time in five years, unbeaten in 17 home games and even 33 home games on a Friday evening – hardly anyone was interested in all of that. Dortmund lags behind the claims with only five points from three games.
The voices of the game
Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund): “We beat ourselves to a large extent in the second half against committed Heidenheimers. It was an up and down game. We have to protect the ball better. We have to learn that. We don’t do things up front and we make wild, wild mistakes in build-up play. Maybe in some people’s minds safety is more important when you’re leading 2-0 against a promoted team.”
Niclas Full Pitcher (Borussia Dortmund): “The second half should never happen like that. The 3:0 was missing. We were no longer so willing to offer ourselves. I was really looking forward to the game and I think I can help.”
Frank Schmidt (coach Heidenheim): “After a quarter of an hour everyone thought that it was all about the result. We took all the risks in the second half, counting on Dortmund creating chances. The longer the game went, the better we got. We had more to gain. We missed the win at the back. We had incredible counterattacks. But the point is mega.”
BVB welcomes Heidenheim at the start of the third match day
Borussia Dortmund and 1. FC Heidenheim open the third match day of the Bundesliga this Friday. In the game at 8.30 p.m. (DAZN), the runner-up from the Ruhr area is the clear favorite in front of their own audience. In the away game at VfL Bochum, however, BVB had problems recently and did not get beyond a 1-1 draw. “We are sure that we will show a different face tomorrow so that we can then win at home,” said coach Edin Terzic on Thursday. His team has four points before the game, Heidenheim with coach Frank Schmidt is still waiting for his first point after promotion.
