Borussia Dortmund Secures 1-0 Victory Against SV Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund celebrated a working victory against SV Werder Bremen. Coach Edin Terzic’s team won 1-0 (0-0) and takes the lead in the table for the time being. On Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart or Bayern Munich can overtake them again with a win.

The goal of the day was scored by Julian Brandt (67th). At BVB there were four special starting eleven nominations: Brandt was the third youngest player in history to play his 300th Bundesliga game, Nico Schlotterbeck played in the German upper house for the 100th time, Mats Hummels was in the 349th time on the pitch for Dortmund (only Michael Zorc has more) and Niclas Füllkrug was allowed to start against his former club. Because pyrotechnics were set off in Bremen’s corner at half-time, the restart was slightly delayed. As a result, Signal-Iduna-Park was enveloped in smoke. BVB remains unbeaten after eight match days.

Borussia Dortmund – SV Werder Bremen: The analysis

Compared to the 4-2 win against Union Berlin last matchday, BVB coach Edin Terzic only made one change: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was replaced by Julian Brandt. Along with Mats Hummels and Niclas Füllkrug, he was one of three German national players who were in the starting line-up despite the rigors of the international trip. Accordingly, nothing changed in the basic 4-2-3-1 formation.

At the beginning, as expected, the guests left the ball to Borussia and only attacked behind the halfway line – and that certainly benefited BVB. Dortmund created their first good chances early in the game. But that was just a snapshot.

After around 15 minutes, Werder played along and caused a lot of uncertainty in the BVB defense. Balls hardly reached the black and yellow team, and promising switching actions were usually nipped in the bud by the braver Bremen team. It was not only in this phase that Dortmund’s midfield struggled to gain control and was often easily outplayed.

On the offensive, BVB often acted uninspired and was easy to predict. It was significant that Marco Reus became really dangerous for the first time after a pass error by Michael Zetterer, who replaced Bremen’s injured number one Jiri Pavlenka (32nd). Shortly before the break he made a brilliant save against Donyell Malen (45+1). Niclas Füllkrug was meanwhile left out of the duel with his former colleagues.

It was also Malen who missed the first big opportunity after the break (53′). Because BVB still lacked the necessary determination, Terzic made a double substitution and surprisingly took down the very active Reus. Giovanni Reyna came for him.

However, Brandt made it 1-0 when he finished off a great pass from Emre Can with a fine chip (67′). Because BVB didn’t become more compelling even after taking the lead and Gregor Kobel saved against Bremen’s Justin Njinmah (82nd), the result didn’t change.

The star of the game: Julian Brandt (BVB)

The national player was the best Dortmund player on the pitch in his 300th Bundesliga game with Reus and the unfortunate Malen. He made a lot of moves, acted aggressively in the duels and crowned his performance with the all-important goal to take the lead. The only major point of criticism: his many ball losses (22).

The flop of the game: Dawid Kownacki (Werder Bremen)

The Pole remains goalless in the Werder jersey. At the time of his substitution, only Niclas Füllkrug had fewer ball touches than the Werder striker on the pitch. However, the national player repeatedly attracted opponents, while Kownacki mostly hung in the air without any influence. He cannot yet replace his counterpart.

The referee: Felix Brych

Hardly anything to do. But that was also due to his generous line, which caused few interruptions. Right not to give Niclas Füllkrug the penalty in the 64th minute.
