BVB coach Edin Terzic was able to rely on returning Adeyemi and Haller after the 2-0 defeat in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup against RB Leipzig, and Bellingham also found himself back on the pitch after his breather in Leipzig. Captain Reus, Özcan (both bench) and the sick wolf gave way.
Union coach Urs Fischer brought a fresh quartet onto the pitch in Rönnow, Jaeckel, Gießelmann and Thorsby after losing the DFB Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt (0:2). Reserve keeper Grill, Diego Leite, Trimmel and Seguin initially sat on the bench.
Nervous start, then BVB gets better – and scores
As against FC Bayern and Leipzig, BVB got off to a nervous start, Süle saw the first yellow card after a few seconds and one mistake (1st). After that, the build-up remained shaky, only after a quarter of an hour did BVB get better at it.
Union Berlin, as usual offensively reserved in the first half, pulled back and let the hosts have the ball, Dortmund had 70 percent ball possession at the end of the first half.
The runner-up’s ball-safe game became correspondingly dominant and pressing, and he consequently took the lead: Guerreiro crossed from the left flat into the middle, where Malen scored correctly again and netted in the third league game in a row (28th).
The goal had no effect on the game, after that the ball kept rolling at BVB until the break, the Köpenickers remained harmless. On the other side, Rönnow had to parry a Haller header (43′).
Both teams came out of the dressing room unchanged in terms of personnel, but BVB now left the play equipment to the guests from time to time without them being dangerous.
Match winner Moukoko comes and scores
The equalizer was therefore all the more surprising, as Süle did not go into a header duel with Behrens and the latter was able to make it 1-1 free-standing after Becker was laid off (61st).
After that it was an open exchange of blows, in which both teams acted nervously and prone to making mistakes, Union was unable to take advantage of the good counterattack chances at times – and finally BVB struck again: Moukoko, who came on five minutes earlier and was 18 years and 139 days old youngest player with 50 Bundesliga appearances, splashed into an unfortunate ball from Seguin, rounded Rönnow and scored the 2-1 for Dortmund (79th).
The Irons never recovered from this and also suffered a defeat in their fourth away appearance at Signal-Iduna-Park – which was so narrow because Bynoe-Gittens missed the 3-1 (90th).
The Black-Yellows will face the bottom of the table next week, Dortmund will be visiting VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (April 15) at 3:30 p.m. Union Berlin have to play again a day later, on Sunday at 5.30 p.m. in front of their home crowd against Bochum.
