Borussia Dortmund Fans Protest Champions League Reform with Newcastle Game Incident

During the game against Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund fans showed what they think of the upcoming Champions League reform from next season: Nothing.

Shortly after the break, the game against the Magpies had to be interrupted for a short time when the score was 1-0 for BVB. Homemade gold bars, money bags and lots of counterfeit money flew onto the field. Banners in the south stand quickly revealed what the supporters were all about.

Behind Gregor Kobel’s goal you could read: “You Don’t Care About The Sport – All You Care About Is Money” and a “No to CL reform” could be read there.

The Spanish referee Alejandro José Hernandez only had to interrupt the game for a few moments. Kobel and colleagues quickly cleared the space again so that things could continue straight away.

The protest was aimed at the controversial, extensive changes in the premier class from the 2024/25 season. Instead of the previous 32, there will now be 36 teams playing, which will no longer be divided into eight groups before the knockout rounds, but will all play together in one league.

The result is a lot more games for the teams. A Champions League season currently consists of 125 games from the group stage onwards, from 2024 there will be 225, a whopping 100 games more.
