It was a sad end to a long BVB time. Roman Bürki was under contract with Borussia Dortmund for around seven years. But he was only on the field for five and a half years. Although he was initially a regular keeper for a long time, a break suddenly followed.
A shoulder injury heralded the end of Bürkis at Borussia Dortmund, which then dragged on for a long time. He spent his last season almost entirely in the stands. Now he is talking about his farewell.
Borussia Dortmund: Bürki farewell after seven years
He completed 233 competitive games for Borussia. He won the DFB Cup twice with the club. But one thing was missing: the Swiss was never completely undisputed. While many fans had a high opinion of him due to his great performances, he also fueled his critics time and again with some mistakes.
Bürki’s end at Borussia Dortmund began with a shoulder injury. This forced him to take a break in spring 2021. Substitute Marwin Hitz stepped in – and was preferred by trainer Edin Terzic even after Bürki’s recovery. The situation did not improve even after the change of coach to Marco Rose – on the contrary. Bürki was retired and practically only sat in the stands. The farewell was inevitable.
“No Bad Blood”
And yet the 32-year-old is not angry with his former employer. “I have no bad blood in me,” said Bürki now to the “Ruhr news“. Players and people at Borussia Dortmund have grown dear to him,
“It wasn’t a happy ending, even though I got another game and was able to say goodbye to the fans and fellow players,” says Bürki, who says: “Sometimes football is also business.”
Borussia Dortmund: Bürki now in the USA
Instead, Bürki went to St. Louis City in the USA last summer. The club will compete in the top division, Major League Soccer, for the first time in 2023. The keeper will even lead his team onto the field as captain.
Further news:
The former Borussia Dortmund player has now settled in well in the USA. And he still has contact with Dortmund. Bürki revealed that he was still in close contact with Marco Reus, for example.
