Bundesliga, 19th matchday
That was a definite game. Borussia Dortmund overran SC Freiburg in the first half. Fourth in the table from Breisgau didn’t have much to oppose a strong BVB.
Borussia Dortmund beat SC Freiburg 5-1 (3-0) at the start of the 19th Bundesliga matchday. Especially in the first round, BVB dominated the guest from Breisgau at will. Thomas Meunier (14th, 29th) and Erling Haaland (45th + 1) put the Westphalians in the lead. For the sports club, Ermedin Demirovic (61st) gave a brief glimmer of hope after a good hour, which Haaland (75th) destroyed again. Mahmoud Dahoud (86th) made it 5-1.
BVB trainer Marco Rose: “The first half was extremely strong, that was great. We did a lot of things right and well today. After the 3-0 win, I would have wished that we had gone through the whole thing.”
BVB starts dominant
Dortmund showed SC Freiburg the limits right from the start. After 14 minutes it was Belgian Thomas Meunier who headed the ball over the line after a Julian Brandt corner. Amazingly, the second goal came in exactly the same way – a corner kick from Brandt, Meunier climbed the highest and nodded off (29′).
Freiburg, otherwise very good at defending opposing standards, conceded two goals after a corner within a quarter of an hour. But it was to get even worse: BVB star Erling Haaland increased the score to 3-0 at half-time in injury time. Jude Bellingham put the ball through nicely, the Norwegian slotted it in in his inimitable style.
Haaland with 14th goal of the season
At the beginning of the second period, BVB noticed that the air was a bit out. The second in the table dropped, Freiburg took advantage of this and was able to shorten. Ermedin Demirovic (61st) scored after assists from Roland Sallai. The Breisgauers shouldn’t be able to do more than the first goal. In the end, Haaland (75th) increased again after an assist from Mahmoud Dahoud. The Norwegian now has 14 goals this season.
Borussia Dortmund set the final point after a nice combination. Donyell Malen put the ball through nicely to Nico Schulz, who only had to put it down to Mahmoud Dahoud (85′). The 26-year-old crowned his performance with a flick into the far corner.
New hunt for Bayern?
Rose: “Last year we were still talking about the Bundesliga getting boring – and rightly so, because we weren’t on an equal footing. Now we’re down to three points. We always say that we’d like to get the trophy to Dortmund. But Bayern are having an excellent season and giving little away. It’s about us taking care of ourselves.”
With the win, Dortmund is increasing the pressure on FC Bayern, who have to play at 1. FC Köln on Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker). Freiburg, on the other hand, are still waiting for their first win of the year after the 2-2 win in Bielefeld and the bankruptcy against BVB. On Saturday, the Streich-Elf could slip to seventh place in the table.
