Börse Express – ‘WSJ’: Unilever joins Facebook boycott

video-tag-article">

The social networks Facebook
and Twitter are under increasing pressure in connection with the racism debate in the USA. Now the consumer goods manufacturer Unilever no longer wants to advertise on both platforms in the USA – at least for the rest of the year. That was announced by Luis Di Como, who is responsible for the media worldwide at Unilever, in an interview with the “Wall Street Journal” (WSJ) on Friday. More needs to be done against hate speech, especially with the current polarization of society and the upcoming US elections. The advertising spell also includes the Instagram platform belonging to Facebook, Unilever also announced.

The list of companies boycotting Facebook is getting longer. These include Verizon , North Face or Eddie Bauer. Facebook and Twitter could not be reached for a comment at short notice. The shares fell on the US stock exchange.

US civil rights organizations had called on companies to boycott. This is how Facebook is to be hit at a sensitive point – the group makes almost all of its sales with advertising revenue. The US wave of protests against racism and police violence has flared up criticism of Facebook for carelessly handling controversial posts. Zuckerberg also made a significant contribution, refusing to take action against controversial statements by US President Donald Trump.

Twitter is not the target of the boycott call, but has recently come under criticism./nas/mis
