After the most recent hunt for a record, the US stock exchanges weakened slightly on Monday in generally quiet trading. The Dow Jones Industrial fell by 0.26 percent to 34 113.83 points. In the past four weeks, the US benchmark index had run from record to record, peaking at 34,256 points on Friday and increasing by around five percent overall. The market-wide S&P 500 fell at the start of the week by 0.14 percent to 4179.65 points, after it had also achieved a new record on Friday.
