Börse Express – New York Stocks: Directionless after Rally

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – At the end of a strong week, the US stock markets initially lacked a clear direction on Friday. The leading index Dow Jones Industrial lost in the first hour of trading 0.29 percent to 34,379.24 points. On a weekly basis, however, it is heading for an increase of almost 4.4 percent after having had the strongest three-day rally since 2020 from Tuesday to Thursday. The market-wide S&P 500
was last up 0.08 percent to 4415.37 points, while the tech-heavy select index Nasdaq 100
by 0.71 percent to 14,218.25 points.

Indications of US interest rates rising even more in the future and a lack of progress in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine curbed investors’ willingness to buy. In addition, options and futures on indices and individual stocks expire on many stock exchanges on the big expiration day this Friday, in the USA in the last hour of trading. Larger market players often try to influence the prices in the direction they want before the expiry date. This often leads to larger price fluctuations./gl/stw
