NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – Two days before the next rate hike by the central bank, the US stock exchanges have hardly moved. The leading index Dow Jones Industrial rose 0.29 percent to 31,993.22 points in early trade on Monday. The broader S&P 500 gained 0.11 percent to 3966.0 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 fell by 0.19 percent to 12,373.47 points.
The stock market has been on the upswing since mid-June. Stockbrokers speak of a bear market rally, i.e. rising prices in the midst of an overall downward market environment. Since the beginning of the year, the Dow has lost around twelve percent, burdened by inflation and recession worries./la/he
